Every course offered at Virginia Western appears in the Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas. The Learning Management System (LMS) Usage Requirements Policy, states that instructors are required to use their Canvas site for specific basic functions such as posting contact information, providing a course syllabus, communicating via announcements, receiving assignment submissions, and posting grades. Final grades will be recorded in SIS however, Canvas is where students will see a running course grade. While the policy outlines the minimum use requirements for all courses regardless of modality, the LMS serves as the classroom and communication platform for all online courses and therefore necessitates expanded use of its available tools and features.
The policy states that:
All faculty, including face-to-face, dual enrollment, hybrid, and online faculty, teaching a credit-bearing course are responsible for providing students with the following materials and information through the college’s Learning Management System (LMS), or, in instances when appropriate for dual enrollment faculty, through the high school-supported LMS:
- Course announcements
- Current course syllabus and access to the course outline
- Student course grades
- Faculty contact information
Faculty will publish the course within the LMS and make available to students by 8:00a.m. on the day the class is scheduled to begin.
The E-learning and Education Technology (ELET) committee of the Virginia Community College's System released a list of best practices. in fall 2019, that all instructors across the system should follow. This list and supporting information guided the creation of the VWCC LMS Usage policy (see previous tab).
