Canvas: Content Migration

This guide contains information and resources to help you learn more about the college's new Learning Management System, Canvas.

Content Sharing

How to move content between your Canvas courses

  1. Direct Copy – To copy a single item to another course you are enrolled in as Teacher
  2. Course Import Tool – This tool can copy selected content items or all content from one course to another.

How to share content between instructors

Instructors can share content with each other that do not involve potential FERPA violations in the following ways.

  1. Direct Share – To share a single item with another instructor
  2. Share to Commons – Share entire courses, modules, or individual items.  Commons is searchable and allows instructors to import the content into their courses.
  3. Create a Master Course – Request an empty sandbox course that can be used for sharing content between enrolled instructors.
  4. Export Course or Content – The entire course or parts of a course can be exported as a zip file that can be shared with another instructor

Course Migration Options

Course Migration Options:
One of the advantages of moving to a new learning platform is the opportunity to reevaluate how our students learn and how we teach them.  This is the time to reexamine your course to make sure that your outcomes, assessments, and resources are appropriately aligned. You have the following options to develop your course in Canvas:

  • Rebuild the course in Canvas from scratch (recommended).
  • Export your Blackboard course and bring certain elements into Canvas as you build your course.
  • Migrate the entire course from Blackboard to Canvas (compatibility concerns).
