In an uncertain world, college campuses are likely to experience unexpected closures from time to time.
Instructional Continuity refers to the continuation of academic instruction along with academic support services at Virginia Western using a variety of instructional technology tools and online learning strategies during an emergency event or extended college closure.
Course completion may take a variety of forms. Most face-to-face classes will move to Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI) using an online modality wherever feasible. Performance-based courses that require hands-on participation and cannot be taught online may be extended beyond the normal academic term dates. Clinical courses will be handled on an individual basis with students still able to attend if the clinical site is accepting students. Faculty will work with their Program Head and Dean to determine the best course of action for their classes.
When campus closures interrupt normally scheduled educational activities, it is imperative that instructors consider alternative means of continuing instruction using Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI). In making a rapid move to ERI, it is critically important that we maintain the confidence of our students and, to the absolute best of our ability, the academic integrity of our classes. That said, ERI delivery will not be perfect, but should establish regular communication with students and keep them progressing toward meeting the established course learning outcomes.
