Writing & Research Center

Welcome!

writing and research center

Located on the 2nd floor (top floor) of Brown Library, the Writing & Research Center helps students with writing assignments from any VWCC course. We will help you throughout all stages of the research & writing process--from finding high-quality information to critiquing a rough draft or to citing sources.

You can meet with us in-person or online any time we are open. For in-person sessions, you can drop-in or make an appointment. For Zoom sessions, you must make an appointment in advance. Make an in-person or Zoom appointment via Navigate Student.

Preparing for a Tutoring Appointment

  • Bring your assignment instructions, handouts, source material, and essay or research paper.
  • Make sure any drafts you bring are legibly handwritten or typed.
  • Identify 2 or 3 specific areas of concern, such as improving sentence structure or providing supporting evidence.
  • If you have general questions about aspects of research, writing, grammar, citations, etc., prepare your questions before you come in.
  • Do not expect the consultant to write your paper or provide you with a thesis statement, or in other ways do the work that you have been assigned to do. You are responsible for your personal academic honesty.

Our Philosophy

Writing & Research Help Center Consultants will respond to papers as readers with expertise in writing, not as editors or proofreaders. This means that while consultants will not "fix" your paper for you, they will use your assignment description and the areas of concern you have identified on your submission form or during the meeting to make suggestions and offer strategies to help you improve your paper. We aim to help you become a successful, independent writer and to preserve the academic integrity your instructor expects. Consultants can only address three areas of concern at a time, so please check only the most important. Once you've revised your paper based on the Consultant's initial response, you're welcome to submit it again or meet with us again for assistance with other areas.
